Record player speakers
The record player speakers on this page are active, which means the amplifier is built right into them and you can connect your turntable without a receiver or a separate amplifier. You'll mainly find pairs of bookshelf speakers from Edifier, Kanto, Jamo, Klipsch, Swan and Victrola, with woofers measuring 2.75 to 8 inches. Most of them also have Bluetooth, so you can play music from your phone as well. Some models have their own phono input and can handle even a turntable that has no preamp.
How do I connect a turntable to active speakers?
It depends on whether your turntable has a built-in preamp. If it does, you'll recognise it by the PHONO / LINE switch: set it to LINE and run a cable from the turntable to the speakers' line input, which is usually labelled RCA, LINE IN or AUX (on some models it's a 3.5 mm jack). You'll find suitable models among our turntables with a built-in preamp. A turntable with a Bluetooth transmitter pairs with Bluetooth speakers without any cable at all.
What if my turntable has no preamp?
The signal coming straight from the cartridge is very weak and a line input can't make up for it, so the music would play quietly and without bass. You have two options. Choose speakers with a phono input, such as Klipsch The Fives, The Sevens, The Nines, R-40PM, R-50PM or Technics SC-CX700, or connect a separate phono preamp between the turntable and the speakers.
Why are there no passive record player speakers here?
Passive speakers, such as the Pro-Ject Speaker Box, don't have their own amplifier, so you can't connect them directly to a turntable. You'll also need an integrated amplifier for them, and if your turntable has no preamp, an amplifier with a phono input. Active speakers are simpler: a turntable, a pair of speakers and one cable.
