Potentiometers

A potentiometer is a rotary variable resistor used to adjust volume or tone on a guitar. It is a component that wears over time, so if your guitar begins to crackle, lose its signal or respond inaccurately to control adjustments, replacement can often help. When choosing, check the resistance value, taper, shaft type and dimensions. The range includes potentiometers from Hosco, Partsland and CTS.

Resistance value and taper type

ParameterWhat it means
250 kΩOften used with single-coil pickups
500 kΩOften used with humbucker pickups
Type A (logarithmic)Volume changes progressively, making it suitable for volume control
Type B (linear)An even change in value, often used for tone control

Always compare the exact value with the original component and the recommendations of the guitar or pickup manufacturer. An incorrect value can change the sound, producing a brighter or darker tone. During testing, turn the shaft slowly and listen for crackling, which is a common sign of a worn resistive track.

What to check before replacement

  1. Resistance value: 250 kΩ, 500 kΩ or another value according to the circuit.
  2. Taper: logarithmic (A) or linear (B), according to the original wiring.
  3. Shaft: the spline type—split or smooth—and its length, so that the knob fits.
  4. Dimensions and mounting: the diameter of the hole in the body and the cavity depth, so the potentiometer fits.
  5. Soldering: replacement requires a soldering iron and basic experience; otherwise, contact a service technician.

A potentiometer is accompanied by control knobs and jacks and covers. You can find other components under guitar replacement parts and guitar hardware.
