Fonky Family, often called La Fonky or La FF, is a pioneering French hip hop group from Marseille. Formed in 1994, the collective includes rappers Le Rat Luciano, Menzo, Don Choa, and Sat, alongside producer Pone, DJ Djel, dancer Blaze, singer Karima, Flex Nandell, and manager Fafa. Emerging after the trailblazing work of IAM, Fonky Family gained early attention with a feature on Akhenaton’s track Les Bad Boys de Marseille.
Their debut album Si Dieu veut was released in 1997 and quickly achieved gold status. In 1998, their collaboration on the soundtrack for Luc Besson's film Taxi helped propel them into the national spotlight after the film and its music reached the top of the French charts. This success was followed by the EPs Hors série volumes 1 and 2.
Their 2001 album Art de rue further cemented their reputation, after which several members pursued solo projects. Fonky Family returned in 2006 with Marginale musique, which debuted at number one in France. Known for their dynamic sound and deep connection to Marseille’s rap scene, Fonky Family’s influence extends beyond music, including their track La Furie et la Foi being featured in the skate film Rodney Vs Daewon Round II. They have a global publishing deal with BMG Music Publishing.
