Drops Yarn

Drops yarn, which many people search for as Drops wool, is knitting yarn from the Norwegian brand Drops, made from wool, alpaca, cotton, silk and linen. The range includes fine yarns for scarves and children's clothing, medium-weight yarns for sweaters and thick yarns for quick-to-knit hats. Ranges such as Brushed Alpaca Silk, Air, Merino Extra Fine, Paris and Snow differ in material, thickness and how fluffy the finished fabric feels. Most balls weigh 50 grams.

What do Drops yarn groups A to F mean?

Drops divides its yarns by thickness into groups A to F, from the finest to the thickest. Drops patterns specify the group, so you can replace the yarn in a pattern with another from the same group, for example Merino Extra Fine with another group B yarn. Always knit a tension swatch when substituting yarn, because belonging to the same group does not mean the knitting tension will be exactly the same.

Which Drops material suits your project?

Drops wool yarns, such as Merino Extra Fine, Karisma or Snow, are warm and suitable for sweaters, hats and gloves. The alpaca in Alpaca, Nepal and Andes is soft and warm. Brushed Alpaca Silk with silk and the blown yarn Air create a light, fluffy fabric for sweaters and scarves. The cotton yarns Paris, Safran and Muskat suit summer tops and children's items, while Belle with linen and viscose gives summer knits a subtle sheen. Fabel with polyamide is more durable, making it suitable for socks. You can compare merino and cotton from other brands in the knitting yarn category or on the merino yarn page.

How many balls of Drops should you buy?

The pattern gives the yarn requirement in grams for each size. For 50-gram balls, divide the required weight by 50 and round the result up. If you are knitting with a different yarn from the one specified in the pattern, work out the quantity by length instead: the length varies even when the weight is the same. For example, 50 g of the cotton yarn Paris has 75 m, while 50 g of Baby Merino has 175 m. Buy the full quantity of one colour at the same time so that all the balls come from the same dye lot.
