Blind Guardian is a German power metal band founded in 1984 in Krefeld. Recognized as pioneers in power and speed metal, the band is a cornerstone of the German heavy metal scene that rose in the mid-1980s. Originally starting as Lucifer's Heritage, they adopted the Blind Guardian name before releasing their debut, Battalions of Fear, in 1988. The classic lineup features Hansi Kürsch on vocals, André Olbrich and Marcus Siepen on guitars, and Frederik Ehmke on drums. Over the years, Blind Guardian has released eleven studio albums, including the ambitious orchestral work Blind Guardian Twilight Orchestra. Famous for their epic sound, layered compositions, and fantasy-inspired lyrics, Blind Guardian draws heavily from literature and mythology, with influences from authors like Tolkien and George R. R. Martin. Albums such as Somewhere Far Beyond, Imaginations from the Other Side, and Nightfall in Middle-Earth are regarded as genre landmarks. Known as "The Bards" by their fans, Blind Guardian remains among the most influential names in power metal, often ranked alongside Helloween, Sabaton, and DragonForce.
