André Previn (born Andreas Ludwig Priwin, April 6, 1929 – February 28, 2019) was a German-American pianist, composer, and conductor whose remarkable career spanned film, jazz, and classical music. He became known early on for his innovative work in Hollywood, arranging and composing music for over fifty films and earning four Academy Awards. In jazz, Previn was celebrated for his trio performances and as a distinguished interpreter of the Great American Songbook. In the classical realm, he gained international recognition as both a pianist and an influential conductor, leading renowned orchestras such as the London Symphony Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, and Vienna Philharmonic. Over his lifetime, he received ten Grammy Awards for his work across genres, as well as a lifetime achievement Grammy, and left an enduring legacy as a versatile and pioneering figure in twentieth-century music.
