Stabilizers (Gimbals)

A gimbal uses motorised axes to compensate for movement while walking, panning or tracking a subject. Before choosing, add up the weight of the complete setup, including the lens, battery, microphone and other accessories. The device must fit within the permitted dimensions and be mechanically balanced before the motors are switched on. For a phone, check the width of the holder and app compatibility.

Number of axes and movement modes

A three-axis gimbal stabilises tilt, rotation and horizontal movement according to the selected mode. Simpler stabilisers may be lighter but offer less control. Tracking modes are useful only if you can switch between them quickly during a shot.

Load capacity is not the only limit

  • the camera's centre of gravity changes with the lens and accessories;
  • the gimbal arms must not strike the screen or cables;
  • battery life depends on balance and motor power;
  • a quick-release plate speeds up the move to a tripod;
  • folded dimensions matter when travelling.

Gimbal or fixed tripod

A gimbal is designed for moving shots, not long exposures or a completely static composition. Use a photo and video tripod for those situations. Choose the setup for the specific digital camera, camcorder or phone it will carry.
