Sketchbooks

A sketchbook is a workspace for sketches, studies, and visual notes. The paper, binding, and format determine whether it is comfortable to draw in with pencil, ink, or wetter media. A small pad is easy to carry, while a large double-page spread provides more room for expressive gestures. Before choosing, clarify your main tool and where you will be drawing.

Paper by medium

  • A smoother surface supports precise lines with technical pens and fine pencils.
  • A fine grain accepts graphite shading and colored pencil better.
  • A higher paper weight provides more tolerance for ink or light washes.

For wet techniques, however, the paper weight alone is not enough; also check the paper manufacturer's recommendation.

The binding affects drawing comfort

A spiral binding lets you fold the sheet back and work in a small space. A sewn or glued binding feels more compact, but you should check whether the sketchbook stays open without being held. Hard covers protect the sheets when drawing outdoors and while carried in a bag. Perforation is useful if you want to remove finished drawings.

A format for travel or the studio

A pocket sketchbook is suitable for quick notes, a medium format for regular practice, and a larger one for figure drawing or landscapes. In the Drawing category, you can match your sketchbook with other tools; Pencils complement graphite, while Markers / Pens / Highlighters are ideal for bold lines.

Protecting work in progress

Place clean paper over soft graphite and pastel to prevent them from transferring to the opposite page. Protect the sketchbook from moisture and loose sharp objects. When drawing across a double-page spread, do not press forcefully on the binding's spine.
