Phono Preamplifiers

Turntable preamps raise the very weak cartridge signal to a level that a standard line input on an amplifier, active speakers or an audio interface can handle. A proper phono preamp also applies RIAA equalization, so records do not sound quiet, thin or lacking bass. When choosing, check the cartridge type, inputs and outputs, noise level, grounding and whether you want hi-fi listening, USB digitizing or wireless playback.

How to choose a turntable preamp

First check what is already in your system. Some turntables have a built-in phono preamp, while others send only the raw cartridge signal. An external turntable preamp makes sense when you have no PHONO input, want better quality than a built-in stage can provide, or need USB, Bluetooth, optical output or MC cartridge adjustment.

When you need a preamp

If your amplifier only has AUX, CD, LINE, TAPE or active speaker inputs, do not connect the turntable directly. The signal will be too weak and tonally unbalanced. Put a turntable preamp between the turntable and the line input. If you use a turntable with its built-in phono stage switched on, connect it to LINE/AUX, not to another PHONO input, to avoid double amplification and distortion.

MM or MC cartridge

Most home turntables use an MM cartridge, which has a higher output and works with a standard MM phono input. MC cartridges have a much weaker signal, so they need an MC or MM/MC preamp with suitable gain and input impedance. If you are not sure, check the cartridge marking in the turntable manual. For home turntables, a good MM model is often enough; with a higher-end hi-fi system, adjustable MC values are worth checking.

RIAA equalization, gain and noise

RIAA equalization restores the natural bass and treble that are modified when a record is cut. Without it, vinyl would sound unnatural. Gain defines how much the preamp boosts the signal; if it is too low you will have to turn the volume up, while unsuitable high gain can cause distortion. Also watch noise, THD and input impedance figures, especially when listening through sensitive speakers or headphones.

Which type of phono preamp to choose

The category includes 23 products, from accessible Behringer, LD Systems, Omnitronic or ART solutions to hi-fi and audiophile models from Pro-Ject, PRIMARE or JJ Electronic. The main differences are signal purity, connectivity, adjustability and whether the preamp only solves basic connection or also offers digitizing and advanced system tuning.

Basic model for an amplifier without PHONO input

If you simply want to connect a turntable to an amplifier without PHONO input, look for a straightforward MM preamp with RCA input, RCA output and a grounding terminal. This solution suits a regular setup where low noise, function and simple wiring matter. Entry-level models from brands such as Behringer or ART can be practical when restoring an older turntable or building your first vinyl system.

Hi-fi solution for a cleaner signal

If you already have a better turntable, cartridge and amplifier, look at Hi-Fi turntable preamps. A better phono stage can reduce noise, separate channels more precisely and preserve more detail from the recording. Check construction, power supply, signal-to-noise ratio and cartridge compatibility. Among Pro-Ject turntable preamps or PRIMARE turntable preamps, you will find solutions for systems where the phono stage difference is audible.

USB, Bluetooth or optical output

A USB phono preamp is useful when you want to archive records on a computer or record samples into music software. Bluetooth is convenient for easy listening without a long cable, but for demanding hi-fi listening a wired RCA connection is still usually the safer choice. Use an optical output for digital connection to an amplifier, DAC or home audio system. With digital functions, also check the quality of the analogue output.

Audiophile models with adjustable impedance and capacitance

Advanced MM/MC preamps let you set gain, input impedance and, for MM cartridges, capacitance. This matters when you want to match the cartridge to the manufacturer's recommendations and get a more balanced sound from the system. Audiophile models may add a subsonic filter, symmetrical design or tube character. Choose this type when you know the cartridge parameters and want control over the final sound.

Compatibility and hum-free connection

The most common wiring is simple: connect the turntable by RCA cables to the preamp input, attach the ground wire to the GND terminal and run the preamp output to the line input of an amplifier or active speakers. Do not use a PHONO input after an external preamp unless you want to amplify the signal twice. If you hear hum, check grounding, cable quality, distance from power adapters and whether the turntable and preamp are connected according to the manufacturer's instructions.

For DJ use, durability, fast wiring and mixer compatibility are important; then DJ turntables and suitable turntable accessories also make sense. Related categories and brands for turntable preamps

If you want to choose by system type, start with Turntables, Home turntables and Hi-Fi turntable preamps. By brand, you can compare accessible Behringer turntable preamps, studio-oriented ART turntable preamps or higher hi-fi solutions from Pro-Ject and PRIMARE. Choose by cartridge and connection, not only by name or price – with vinyl, the compatible phono stage, clean gain and correct grounding matter most.
