Jersey and Stretch Sewing Machine Needles

Jersey and Stretch Sewing Machine Needles have a rounded ball point that pushes the fibres of knitted fabric aside rather than piercing them. This prevents the fabric from laddering or developing holes and keeps the machine from skipping stitches, even on stretchy fabrics. Here you’ll find Singer and Schmetz needles in the 130/705 H system for domestic sewing machines: needles for jersey and knitwear, Stretch needles for fabrics containing elastane, and Super Stretch needles. Sizes range from 65 to 100, in packs of a single size and assorted sets. Twin needles with a needle spacing of 2.5 and 4 mm are also included.

Jersey and Stretch Sewing Machine Needles: which type should you choose?

A jersey needle (Schmetz Jersey or Ball Point, Singer for knitwear) has a ball point and is intended for cotton jersey, tricot and knitted fabrics. The point slips between the knit loops without tearing them or causing them to run.

A Stretch needle has a medium ball point, a smaller eye and a deeper scarf above the eye. These features prevent skipped stitches even on very stretchy fabrics containing elastane, lycra or spandex, on swimwear or fleece. Both Singer and Schmetz mark their Stretch needles in yellow.

When should you use a Super Stretch needle?

The Schmetz Super Stretch needle (HAx1SP) has a specially shaped shank that positions it closer to the machine’s hook. This makes it easier for the machine to catch the thread loop and prevents skipped stitches even on fine, highly elastic knits. The larger eye and wider thread groove also accommodate thicker thread. Schmetz recommends it for highly elastic fabrics, such as those used for underwear and bras. It fits domestic sewing machines that use the 130/705 H system and some overlock machines, so check your machine’s manual before buying.

What is a twin needle for knitted fabrics used for?

A twin needle has two needles on one shank and sews two parallel rows of stitches at the same time. You can use it to sew a hem on knitted fabric in place of a cover stitch made on a coverstitch machine. Sew with a straight stitch and the needle in the centre position; the needle spacing of 2.5 or 4 mm determines how far apart the rows of stitches will be.
