Floor Toms

Floor toms, often called “kettles,” stand on their own legs and add a deep, resonant tone to the drum set. They are used for powerful transitions, accents, and rhythmic passages that require more volume than classic suspended toms. When choosing a floor tom, pay attention to the diameter, depth, stability of the legs, and tuning, as these factors determine whether the sound will be full and open or rather short and controlled. The floor tom should blend naturally with the other toms and the bass drum.

Choosing Based on Playing Style

A smaller floor tom is faster and easier to tune into a compact kit, while a larger model adds deeper low-end for rock, metal, or high-energy stage performances. If you’re adding to an existing kit, compare not only the size but also the shell material, finish, and type of hoops. A properly chosen floor tom will expand the kit’s dynamic range without sounding disconnected from the rest of the drums.
