DSM & Humboldt Dumblifier Special Preamp/Rack Amplifier
The DSM & Humboldt Dumblifier Overdrive Special is an all-analog zero-watt two-channel amp simulator pedal that recreates the legendary tone and feel of a Dumble Overdrive Special in a compact floor unit. Built around proven analog amplifier modeling technology, it delivers the punchy compression and touch-responsive sustain that made the original amps iconic, while adding modern features like stereo cab simulation, FX loop, and reverb. Handmade in Chile, it works equally well as a complete amp replacement or as a two-channel overdrive in front of any rig.
- All-analog zero-watt two-channel design with switchable Clean and Overdrive channels
- Per-channel stereo cab simulation with 3 cabinet sizes and 3 speaker types, plus independent bypass
- Built-in stereo reverb engine with Plate, Ether, and Room modes
- Stereo FX loop, dual XLR DI outputs with ground lift, headphone out, and 3.5 mm aux input
Analog Dumble Tone and Feel in a Stereo Pedal
The DSM & Humboldt Dumblifier Overdrive Special is an all-analog zero-watt two-channel amp simulator pedal engineered to reproduce not only the sound but the unmistakable playing feel of one of the most sought-after boutique guitar amplifiers ever built. Rather than relying on digital processing, the design uses proven analog amplifier modeling technology to recreate the dynamic compression, touch sensitivity, and bloom that define the Dumble Overdrive Special character. The Dumblifier Overdrive Special is the right choice for guitarists who want the legendary Dumble voice and response without the cost, weight, or fragility of a vintage tube amp.
What Sets the Dumblifier Apart
Where most Dumble-style pedals are designed to run in front of an amplifier and rely on the host amp for the final character, this unit goes further: it can operate as a complete analog amp replacement with built-in cab simulation and stereo outputs, or as a two-channel overdrive in front of any rig. The team at DSM Humboldt had the rare opportunity to study a genuine 1970s Dumble ODS in Tokyo, and that hands-on analysis informed the voicing. A per-channel stereo cab engine with three cabinet sizes (2x12 open back, 1x12 open back, 4x12 closed back) and three speaker types (G12M, G12H, EV12L) lets players dial complex multi-amp textures straight from the pedalboard.
Two-Channel Architecture and EQ
The signal path mirrors the original amp topology, with tone-shaping controls placed before the overdrive circuit for maximum flexibility. A shared three-band EQ (Bass, Mid, Treble) feeds both channels, while voicing switches shape the overall character on the fly. The Rock/Jazz switch swaps between a punchy low-end-heavy voicing and a more neutral, mid-present curve, and the Mid Boost shifts the mid band down to around 200 Hz for a thicker, more complex sound. A Bright switch turns the clean gain knob into a reactive high-end control, while the Presence knob provides a wider-band boost across the power-amp section.
- Channels: Clean and Overdrive, switchable via footswitch
- EQ Section: 3-band Bass / Mid / Treble with Rock-Jazz voicing switch, Bright switch, and Mid Boost (mid shifted to ~200 Hz)
- Pre Amp Boost (PAB): +9 dB boost, assignable to the REV/PAB footswitch
Cabinet Simulation and Reverb
Because the pedal is designed to work as a full amp replacement, the cab simulation is unusually deep. Each stereo output channel can be assigned its own cabinet size and speaker type independently, then bypassed per side via rear-panel switches for players who prefer to feed a real cab or use their own IRs. After the FX loop, a stereo reverb engine applies Room, Plate, or Ether modes, with the reverb amount controlled from the front panel and switched on or off via the multifunction footswitch.
- Cab Sim: 3 cabinet sizes (2x12 open back, 1x12 open back, 4x12 closed back) × 3 speaker types (G12M, G12H, EV12L), assignable per channel with independent bypass
- Reverb: Stereo Plate / Ether / Room modes with front-panel level and footswitch on/off
I/O, Power, and Build
A complete I/O set makes the unit equally comfortable on stage, in the studio, or in a headphone practice rig. The stereo FX loop uses a mono send with stereo returns, allowing a mono effect to appear on both outputs or a stereo effect to be split across them. Two XLR DI outputs with a ground-lift switch feed a front-of-house or recording interface directly, while a 3.5 mm headphone jack with its own volume control and a 3.5 mm aux input enable silent practice and play-along sessions. The pedal runs on a standard 9 V DC center-negative supply and is handmade in Chile.
- FX Loop: Stereo with mono 6.3 mm send and L/R 6.3 mm returns
- DI Outputs: 2x XLR with ground-lift switch
- Headphone / Aux: 3.5 mm stereo headphone out with dedicated volume, 3.5 mm aux input
- Dimensions: 135 × 115 × 65 mm
- Weight: 420 g
- Power: 9 V DC center-negative, barrel 5.5 × 2.1 mm (PSU not included)
Who the Dumblifier Is For
The Dumblifier Overdrive Special is the right choice for guitarists who want authentic Dumble-style tone and feel in a pedalboard-friendly format, whether they play jazz, blues, fusion, classic rock, soul, or indie. Cover-band players and gigging musicians who need a single box that covers clean, edge-of-breakup, and saturated lead tones will appreciate the four core sounds available from the Clean channel, Clean with Pre Amp Boost, Overdrive channel, and Overdrive with Pre Amp Boost, all without external pedals. Recording engineers and home players benefit from the stereo DI outputs, headphone monitoring, and aux input for silent sessions, while amp purists can route the unit to the front end or power section of a real amplifier with the cab sim bypassed.
The DSM Humboldt Approach
DSM Humboldt Electronics developed the Dumblifier after spending time with a genuine 1970s Dumble Overdrive Special in Tokyo, an opportunity that gave the design team direct insight into the original amp's compression, sag, and harmonic behavior. The result is a handmade-in-Chile analog pedal that aims to deliver not just the sound but the feel of one of the most legendary amplifiers ever built, in a format that fits on any pedalboard and travels to any gig.
