DJ Mixers

A DJ mixer combines audio sources and allows you to move smoothly between them, adjust volume and EQ, and monitor a cue signal. Choose the number of channels according to how many players, turntables or other devices you want to use at once. A vinyl setup requires suitable phono inputs, while digital work may require a computer or audio-interface connection depending on the model. Check the main outputs and headphone connector before buying.

The terms DJ mixing desk and DJ mixer are often used for the same type of device. Do not confuse it with a DJ controller, however: a mixer processes connected audio sources, while a controller primarily operates software.

Two or more channels

Setup	Practical choice	What to check
Two players	Two-channel mixer	Phono/line inputs and separate cue monitoring
Several sources	Four-channel or larger model	Number of inputs that can be used simultaneously
Hybrid setup	Mixer with digital connectivity	Supported software, drivers and operating system

Controls that suit your mixing style

For fast transitions, the crossfader response and a clear control layout are important. Separate cue controls and easily visible level meters make longer sets more manageable. Effects are useful when you can engage them without searching through menus; a smaller, clearer surface may be better for a simpler setup.

What you can connect to the mixer

For a vinyl setup, see DJ turntables. If you want to control software from a single device, DJ controllers are a suitable alternative. To prepare the next track, you need closed-back DJ headphones that are comfortable for one-ear monitoring.

Compare DJ mixers according to the actual connections you need, not only the number of controls. A DJ mixing desk must accept every source, send the signal to the sound system and provide a separate cue mix at the same time.
