Beyerdynamic M 160 (2023) Ribbon Microphone

Beyerdynamic M 160 is a dynamic double ribbon microphone featuring a hypercardioid polar pattern, effective for all types of studio voice reproduction. In the recording studio, the M 160 is recommended for miking instruments such as violins, violas, cellos, pianos, and saxophones, as well as for hi hat and toms. Its non glare black surface and compact size allow for unobtrusive use in TV or film studios. In conjunction with the M 130 dynamic double ribbon microphone, the M 160 is ideal for stereo recordings in MS (Mid Side) technique.

The defining feature of the mic is its directional patterns. While most ribbon microphones rely on a figure 8 polar pattern, the M 160 distinguishes itself with hypercardioid. It is less sensitive to ambient noise as a result because it lowers noise suppression at 110° by 25 dB and captures less noise from behind. The mic offers good bass response, warm mid-ranges and silky highs meld together in a special vintage sound.
The M 160 was inducted into the NAMM TEC Awards Technology Hall of Fame in 2019 for its contribution to the advancement of audio technology.

Frequency Range

Frequency Range: 40 Hz - 18 kHz

The frequency response 40 Hz - 18 kHz provides a wide enough range to capture all the fine musical and sonic details.

Polar Pattern

Polar Pattern: Hypercardioid

A hypercardioid polar pattern offers an even narrower front sensitivity compared to a cardioid, with greater rejection of sounds from the sides and increased pickup from the rear. It is ideal for isolating sound sources in noisy environments but requires careful placement due to its rear sensitivity.
